It is a variant of simultaneous interpretation since the technique used is the same, that is, there are no interruptions. However, in this case, no technical equipment is required.
The goal is for communication to flow as though all meeting participants spoke the same language.
KEY FACTORS IN WHISPERED INTERPRETING
Whispered interpretation is a perfect cost-effective solution for small group meetings where only one or two participants require interpretation services and where the rest of the participants do understand the language used by the speaker.
In these circumstances a further good solution that avoids such close contact between the interpreter and the client is the use of mobile technical equipment. This allows both the interpreter and the client to listen to the message through headphones, making the interpreter’s work easier and giving the client more autonomy. As the interpreter does not have a soundproofed space, this option is only recommended for small groups.
In whispered interpretation the interpreter listens to the original message, processes and translates it, while continuing to listen to the rest of the speech, all in a very short space of time.
It is therefore necessary for the interpreter to have a large capacity for concentration, to be a good speaker and to have a talent for improvisation. In this case, the interpreter is present in the room together with the rest of the participants.
